BARBARA LYNN - 'Until Then I'll Suffer'

My Chi-Town girl Dusty Rose comes thru in the clutch with a dynamite album for the chosen few. These are recordings by one of Soul's most under-rated and understated voices. Barbara hits full stride with a great mix of underground classic soul cuts including "Until Then I'll Suffer", "To Get You Back Again", "This Is The Thanks I Get" and "You're Gonna Need Me." This album includes some heart-breaking versions of tracks like Brenton Wood's "I Like the Way You Love Me" and the Marvelettes' "Forever" plus a smooth cut cover of "Somebody Please."
*
1. Forever
2. I'd Rather Go Blind
3. You'll Lose a Good Thing - live
4. Until Then I'll Suffer
5. To Get You Back Again
6. This is the Thanks I Get
7. What Now
8. Tonight is the Night
9. Let's Stay Together
10. Somebody Please
11. You're Gonna Need Me
12. I Like the Way You Love Me

RossyBoy's Lucky Thirteen Vol 13

I had already prepared quite a few tracks for this comp when one of our regular vistors, Eugene, made a comment about Soloe's excellent post yesterday which gave me the clue I needed to finish it off. Eugene mentioned "versions" in relation to Marvin Gaye's "Come Live With Me Angel" and cited the track by Audrey Motaung which I then promised to include, and here it is, at number 15. A bit more modern than we're used to here, let me know what you think of South African Soul !?! But then I realised that I really am the ultimate "version"merchant anyway...... hell, vatos, I've got 25 different versions of "Dark End Of The Street" alone, that you can listen to on my Dan Penn web site! And in all my previous comps I feature unusual versions of better know rolas. So I just picked me a few more versions! Some are, in fact, the original versions of popular favorites. That's the case with track 1 which I had chosen to honor my carnal, OneEvilDog, who continually comes up with great rolas, great arte and inspiring ideas for me. Thanks, Ese! The great Tommy Hunt and the Orlons both got their versions of the featured tracks out a year before Dusty and the Searchers, on a "B" side in the Orlon's case. I stumbled over José Feliciano for the first time in an age when I heard him guesting on War's "Peace Sign", the album which hailed their resurrection in 1994, so I thought I'd include the track here, "East L.A." - kind of appropriate, no? The killer for me in this set is Baby Washington's take on the Jimmy Ruffin classic "What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted". I thought I'd finish off with an old Edwin Starr favorite from my dancing days....and those were a long time ago, so it must be a real oldie! Enjoy!

Track List
01 - Willie Mae 'Big Mama' Thornton - Hound Dog
02 - Eddie Holman - It's All In The Game
03 - Holly Maxwell - Only When You're Lonely
04 - Bob & Gene - You Gave Me Love

Sapo - Sapo - 1974

Originally from San Francisco's Mission District, Richard Bean's next project after leaving Malo, the band Sapo, would reflect his artistic vision and his alone. Formed in 1972, Sapo would remain faithful to the Latin-soul-rock formula. Their only album, this 1974 debut on Bell Records, "Sapo", was solid, showcasing brassy arrangements, terse guitar interjections and Bean's winsome lead vocals. "Can't Make It" and "Ritmo del Corazon" are nice numbers, but the salsa-flavored "Sapo Montuno" is the album's choicest cut. All the ingredients are in place: the lazily percolating rhythm section, the tersely braying horns, the Wes Montgomery-inspired guitar fills and jabbing piano. It may be the best album of its kind, in my humble opinion, but the album's sales were disappointing. Give it a listen and make up you own mind - I'm sure you won't be disappointed!

Track List
01 - Been Had
02 - Can't Make It
03 - Ritmo del Corazon
04 - Get It On
05 - Nina
06 - It's the Music
07 - Sapo's Montuno
08 - Wishbone

Patti LaBelle & The Bluebelles Over The Rainbow The Atlantic Years

When you have songwriters like Burt Bacharach, Dan Penn/Spooner Oldham and Curtis Mayfield penning your tracks, it's hard for a great singer like Patti to go wrong. The longevity of her career stands testimony to her talent, but from 1966 to 1969 she was possibly in her prime. So there are some great tracks here, such as "All Or Nothing" and "Wonderful". But the standout, in my humble opinion, is a B-side from 1966 - "I Need Your Love". I have to thank G MAN for re-introducing me to this one some months back and it has claimed its rightful place in my affections ever since. Hope you all enjoy that one and the rest of Patti's legacy as much as I do!

Track List
01 - Over The Rainbow
02 - Patti's Prayer
03 - Groovy Kind Of Love
04 - All Or Nothing
05 - You Forgot How To Love
06 - Family Man
07 - I'm Still Waiting
08 - Always Something There To Remind Me
09 - I Don't Want To Go On Without You

13 - Oh My Love
14 - I Need Your Love

16 - Wonderful
17 - Dance To The Rhythm Of Love
18 - Pride's No Match For Love

RossyBoy's Twelfth Night Vol 12

I've been thinking about our team on this one. A couple of Tejas tracks for Lil'cholo - a Freddy Fender version of a lowrider favorite plus a nice one from Moses Dillard, who had a biggie with brother Joshua on "My Elusive Dream". And track 15 is a tribute to G MAN and all the work he does on this site and his sister site. In our house, the last two weeks of the year is when Phil Spector's Christmas album comes out and gets played non-stop! The killer track on that album is by Darlene Love, a great chanteuse who never really got the credit she deserved. Well here's a version of that rola that you can play any time of the year! I'm kinda pleased that I tracked this one down. There's also a hard-to-find alternate version of Zilla Mayes' killer classic "I Love You Still" - this one issued separately on the Charly label and I never thought it as good as the original, but the more I spin it the more its own charms grow on me. Hopefully you'll like some or all of this wide-ranging bunch! Let me know!

Track List
01 - Bobby Moore & The Rhythm Aces - Hey Mr. DJ
02 - Tommy & Cleve - Boo Ga Loo Baby
03 - Festivals - Music
04 - Zilla Mayes - I Love You Still (Charly version)
05 - Freddy Fender - You'll Lose A Good Thing
06 - Millie Jackson - A House For Sale
07 - Chuck Jackson & Maxine Brown - Daddy's Home
08 - Moses Dillard & The Tex-Town Display - Won't Somebody Help Me
09 - Four Sonics - You Don't Have To Say You Love Me
10 - Gene Chandler - Here Comes The Tears
11 - Invincibles - Heart Full of Love
12 - Roddie Joy - If There's Anything Else You Want (Let Me Know)
13 - Vee Gees - It's So Hard To Stay So Long
14 - Sunny & The Sunliners - No One Else Will Do
15 - Gallahads - Keeper of Dreams
16 - Little Beaver - Do Right Man
17 - Ann Sexton - I Want To Be Loved
18 - Darlene Love - Johnny (Baby Please Come Home)
19 - Willie & The Mighty Magnificents - Funky 8 Corners Part 2
20 - Lou Johnson - Thank You Anyway (Mr. DJ)

Oldies... Tejano Style

OK Ladies and Gentlemen, here we have a true G Side Records original. Never done before, here I offer you another Lil'Cholo Production, Oldies... Tejano Style, a comp like no other and it's being offered here first on Tomorrow's Velvet Dreamz.

The title of this comp is called "Oldies... Tejano Style" for a reason and that's because all the songs on this comp are performed strictly by Tejano artists. Some of these songs are remakes and you will be familiar with, while others are originals from the artists themselves and this could be the first time you ever hear these songs.

You will find that the song "La Bamba" is entered twice on this comp andthat's because I didn't want to leave the late Selena out of this comp. She has a beautiful voice and she would have been huge right now in the musicindustry in both the Tejano and Pop/R&B charts. She was killed tragicallyso unfortunately she is gone but her memories and her music will live on forever.

Some of you might know some of these artists, the late Freddy Fender, maybe? Anyhow, these are all well known artists here in Tejas and some are know around the world. Some of the remakes sound mighty good with a touch of Spanish mixed in, one(Jimmy Edwards of Latin Breed - I Turn You On ) sounds like the Godfather of Soul himself. I have handpicked each song for this comp so you know they are worth listening to. LOL!

ANYWAY,

As you all know, someone has been downloading and then selling music from this site on eBay ILLEGALLY so this will be mostly a G Side Records Familia Exclusive with a few exceptions. Familia will have the link and password emailed to them directly. Others will need to email me for the password with the condition that they/you will acknowledge that this comp nor any of the singles within the comp are for sale, NO EXCEPTIONS. If you would like the password, please leave a comment asking for the password and leaving the email addy where you would like the password sent to. The zip file will contain images without the watermarks on them.

As always, the music on this site is purely for your personal enjoyment and not intended to be sold by anyone.

Thank You

~Lil'Cholo

Jackie Edwards - Put Your Tears Away

Well, I promised you some Jackie Edwards and here we go with this album, on the Island label from 1969. And it's sure to be a bit different for all you cholos and cholas out there (including our new brother Lil'cholo) because this is Soul with a Caribbean/Brit flavour. Born in Jamaica in 1938, Edwards came to the attention of Chris Blackwell in 1959 and when Blackwell set up Island records in London in 1962, Jackie travelled with him. I featured the title track on my 4th compilation some time back, but Jackie penned 9 of the other 11 tracks himself, including two that were No. 1 UK hits for the Spencer Davis Group. So, he was a talented guy and a great soul singer and reggae artist in his own right. He passed away in 1992. He does a fine rendition of the Neil Diamond classic "Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon" here. And watch out for the bonus track, a nice version of "I Do Love You" with a reggae beat. A while ago I also promised you some sweet reggae rolas, so I thought I'd include a couple of Jackie's, plus two of his duets, as bonuses for this post. Let me know what you think of this set!

Track List
01 - Put Your Tears Away
02 - Come Back Girl
03 - I Feel So Bad
04 - Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon
05 - Hush06 - Come On Home
07 - Somebody Help Me
08 - Keep On Running
09 - The Same One
10 - I Don't Know
11 - Tell Me What It's All About
12 - L-O-V-E
Bonus Tracks, courtesy of RossyBoy, not on album
13 - I Do Love You
14 - with Hortense Ellis - Worried Over You
15 - with Judy Mowatt - In Paradise
16 - Come To Me Softly

PS I am continuing to post downloads with no restrictions as I believe most of our visitors are genuine music lovers and I don't believe in punishing the innocent for the sins of the guilty. Not every one is a BlobbyMan out there! But I do report every violation I spot on e-Bay.

The Mirettes - In the Midnight Hour

Kinda hard to follow on from OneEvilDog's tribute to his brother yesterday, but I suppose normal service has to be resumed at some stage. I'd planned this post after the exchange of pleasantries with ScavenJah relating to the Mirettes. When the 1964-1966 edition of the Ikettes - Robbie Montgomery, Vanetta Fields, and Jessie Smith - decided to leave Ike Turner's organization to record on their own, they came up with the name the Mirettes because Ike had a licence on the Ikettes name. They made two albums; this is their first from 1967, on Revue. You'll find the sweet rola mentioned by ScavenJah, "First Love" here. There's also a nice version of "Keep On Running" made famous by the Spencer Davis Group. It was written by Jackie Edwards, a West Indian based in UK in the Sixties. Jackie has a great album called "Put Your Tears Away" which I must dig out and post for you soon. Anyway, back to the Mirettes - I just thought this one was too good to keep to myself.............so here you go!

Track List
A1 Take Me For A Little While (2:56)
A2 The Real Thing (3:14)
A3 I'm A Whole New Thing (3:14)
A4 On The Good Ship Lollipop (2:28)
A5 Somewhere (3:02)
B1 Keep On Running (2:40)
B2 First Love (2:40)
B3 Tweedle Dee (3:18)
B4 To Love Somebody (3:28)

THE GIRL DON'T CARE - GENE CHANDLER

A big thanx goes out to Mr. Anonymous who comes through with a great album from Gene Chandler titled "The Girl Don't Care." This is one of Chandler's best...full of midtempo grooves, smooth ballads and uptempo cuts like "Good Times." Curtis Mayfield"s "Nothing Can Stop Me" is spiced with punchy horns and great backing vocals for Gene to play his cool, swaggering tenor against. The pain in his voice is undeniable on "Here Come the Tears," where he literally cries the agonizing lyrics. He gets philosophical on "The Girl Don't Care," an intense ballad that always seems too short. This could almost pass for a greatest-hits LP, since at least six of the selections were released as A-sides. "Fool for You," as well as the others mentioned above, got their share of plays on soul stations, and all should have been bigger hits. The B-sides occupy most of side two and are just a couple of notches below the A sides. It's amazing how overlooked and underappreciated these tracks are.

1. Nothing Can Stop Me 2:59
2. You Can't Hurt Me No More 2:37
3. (I'm Just a) Fool for You 2:40
4. Here Come the Tears 2:37
5. (Gonna Be) Good Times 2:25
6. The Girl Don't Care 2:48
7. To Choose 2:25
8. Bet You Never Thought 2:38
9. Baby That's Love 2:50
10. Buddy, Ain't It a Shame 2:42
11. No One Can Love You (Like I Do) 2:31
12. My Love 2:39

Lil'Cholo's Cali Boy Memories

OK folks, here it is as promised, a compilation of music from the 70's to early 80's in callaboration with G Side Records and with some help from G Man himself whom I'd also like to send a big shout out to for asking me to a member of this site. Thanz alot G Man!

These are songs I listened to while I was growing up as a teen in Cali(thus the title), these are still some of my favorites today, some 30 plus years later. What can I say, they don't make them like they used to so I keep enjoying these til this day and will continue to do so para siempre. Around here in Tejas, coming across someone that listens to the same type of music(oldies) that I do is rare so I usually end up cruising solo and enjoying them all by myself....better that way, if ya know what I mean, nobody telling you to change the radio, etc...

OK folks, wash and wax up the "Ranfla", pick up your Ruca(this part is strongly recommended), and get ready to cruise and listen to what I think will be one of the best cruising CD's you will ever come across...or atleast I hope so.

Anyhow, in ending my little story, I'd like to Thank G Man for his help and everybody from Tomorrow's Velvet Dreamz and The Keeper of Lost Dreamz for all the wonderful work they do in helping to keep our "Dreamz" alive.

Hope everyone enjoys these rolas as much as I did and still do. It's hard for me to pick a favorite from all of these but if I had to choose it would be Track #7, a rare gem that seems to be forgotten(not by me) with time, it's a 1970 Duet by Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr. titled "You Don't Have To Be A Star", Ahhh, the memories...hopefully these songs will rekindle some of yours as well.

~Mike From Tejas...aka...Lil'Cholo

PS. I know I said it would be between 16-18 songs but can you blame me for making it more? LOL!

Anyhow, please don't be shy in leaving me some feedback via the comments link. If you like this CD, maybe I can work on putting together another. Your ideas are very much welcome.

Chuck Jackson & Maxine Brown - Saying Something

II saw that one of our sister sites had posted the only other album by Chuck and Maxine, so I thought I'd better better get this one, their first and far superior, in my opinion, up pretty quick. The cover notes from Robert B, "Q", Katz read as follows: "The greatest bit of news to hit the music world in quite a while is the teaming up of Maxine Brown and Chuck Jackson, also known as 'Mr. Soul'. Maxine and Chuck have both been around for quite some time and both are tremendous in their own right. Now that they are teaming up on this new release 'Saying Something', it should be the hottest thing to come down the pike in years. These two great performers, each with their own individual style, will complement each other in such a way as to be the beginning of a great team. In my opnion Miss Brown and Mr. jackson can look forward to even more promising careers as a team - this in addition to their already flourishing careers as evidenced by their popularity and success over the years". Well, that was written back in 1966, so you can determine now if "Q" was correct - here's the album in all its analog, mono glory !!!

Track list
A1 - Something You Got
A2 - I Need You So
A3 - Please Don't Hurt Me
A4 - Cause We're In Love
A5 - Don't Go
B1 - Can't Let You Out Of My Sight

RossyBoy's Bleeding Hearts Vol 11

First off let me start by giving big props to OneEvilDog, the arte maestro, who, when I asked him for some assistance with a cover for this comp, took the theme and worried it like a juicy bone to come up with the cover background. Hope you find it as fine as I do. A big thx to you, OED ! All I had to do then was the titling for the cover and the selection of the rolas for this theme, which is “Hearts”. Note, “Hearts” and not the singular “Heart”, because you will find that while “Anyone Who Had A Heart” can find lots and lots of tracks with “Heart” in the title, seeking out “Hearts” is a much trickier proposition. So it has been harder work than I expected and I had to resort to using the theme in both titles and group names to come up with this set. And I had to cast the net wide across the soul genres to get the goods – but you know I usually throw a little bit of everything into the mix anyway! So you will find classic New Orleans southern soul from Betty Harris and a more recent track from Willy DeVille. I’m glad to be able to feature Willy here because unfortunately he passed away last month. His group Mink DeVille’s rola “Just To Walk That Little Girl Home” is a big favorite of mine – must feature it sometime soon as a memorial. There is nice country soul from Bobby Charles - a track from his great album “Last Train To Memphis”. A couple of blue-eyed tracks from Eddie Hinton and Len Barry who have also both featured for me recently. Motown is showcased courtesy of Hearts Of Stone. Plus a mixture of Northern soul, doo-wop and great gangster souldies. Behind the scenes, the TVD crew is really getting its act together on the collaboration front and I think you’ll find in future that the whole is much greater than the sum of the parts. You can make up your mind on that; but right now it’s time to open up your hearts, and your ears ………

HANG ON IN THERE - MIKE JAMES KIRKLAND

Here's a rare, obscure, dynamite album dropped off to me recently by Pobre' Riche. This is a must have for every soul collector, composed by the talented Mr. Kirkland.

Singer Mike James Kirkland recorded an impressive pair of albums for MCA during the 1970s but lack of interest on the label's part led to their eventual obscurity. That is until fans of ultra-rare rare groove caught wind of the sounds of Doin' It Right and Hang on in There, both of which began to change hands for astronomical prices amongst collectors. The latter drew obvious comparisons to What's Going On, Marvin Gaye's classic 1971 meditation on an ailing society. The first side of Kirkland's Hang on in There reads like an alternate version, exploring many of the same themes. "What Have We Done?" he asks on the album opener over an excellent conga and flute-spiced funk groove, a track followed by the equally pained "Where is the Soul of Man?." Both are eclipsed however, by the eight-minutes-plus title track. The album's undeniable centerpiece, "Hang on in There" is a lyrical tour de force over a slow-burning groove. Though arrangement touches are as lush as a film score, the underlying rhythms are rooted in urban funk: bells, backing singers and syrupy strings meshing perfectly with guitar scratch and percolating bass. For the album's second half Kirkland turns his attention to the mysteries of love. This material is the product of an underrated artist at the peak of his compositional powers.

The Ballads

I was putting together some gen on this Sixties Bay Area group today and thought it was worth sharing with you all. From Berkeley, California, The Ballads hit big in 1968 with “Bless Our Love” (Venture 615) a Chi-Town classic which was written by Billy Butler (brother of Jerry Butler) and was a hit for Gene Chandler in 1964. The Ballad’s sultry version of “Bless Our Love” stayed on the R&B tracks for 12 weeks, peaking at No. 8. In Los Angeles the Ballads did a little better climbing to No. 4 on the soul chart at radio station KGFJ. Friends since the late fifties John Foster and Stan Harris met while attending Burbank Junior High School – soon after they started singing together as The Holidays. They were joined by Oakland High friends Lesley La Palma and Nathan Robertson and later by Rico Thompson, the lead singer and front-man, who was from Delano, California. The group started recording in 1965 as The Fabulous Ballads. By the time the Venture single hit the streets it had been around for about a year. It was first released as Bay View 1142 in 1967, then on the Soul Trip label. Here are a selection of some of their fine tunes for your enjoyment.

Track List:
Bless Our Love
Confessing A Feeling
I Can't See The Love
I Love You, Yeah
The Gift Of Love
This Is Magic
Treat Me Like Your Woman
(PS I just found out that the track "This Is Magic" is by a different group also called The Ballads out of Philadelphia. Sorry about that. RossyBoy. 6 Sept.)
