I had already prepared quite a few tracks for this comp when one of our regular vistors, Eugene, made a comment about Soloe's excellent post yesterday which gave me the clue I needed to finish it off. Eugene mentioned "versions" in relation to Marvin Gaye's "Come Live With Me Angel" and cited the track by Audrey Motaung which I then promised to include, and here it is, at number 15. A bit more modern than we're used to here, let me know what you think of South African Soul !?! But then I realised that I really am the ultimate "version"merchant anyway...... hell, vatos, I've got 25 different versions of "Dark End Of The Street" alone, that you can listen to on my Dan Penn web site! And in all my previous comps I feature unusual versions of better know rolas. So I just picked me a few more versions! Some are, in fact, the original versions of popular favorites. That's the case with track 1 which I had chosen to honor my carnal, OneEvilDog, who continually comes up with great rolas, great arte and inspiring ideas for me. Thanks, Ese! The great Tommy Hunt and the Orlons both got their versions of the featured tracks out a year before Dusty and the Searchers, on a "B" side in the Orlon's case. I stumbled over José Feliciano for the first time in an age when I heard him guesting on War's "Peace Sign", the album which hailed their resurrection in 1994, so I thought I'd include the track here, "East L.A." - kind of appropriate, no? The killer for me in this set is Baby Washington's take on the Jimmy Ruffin classic "What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted". I thought I'd finish off with an old Edwin Starr favorite from my dancing days....and those were a long time ago, so it must be a real oldie! Enjoy!
