RossyBoy's Moving Pictures Vol 16
Putting together a comp is more of an art than a science. In this case we start with some duties and obligations, in the form of some requests - so there's Joya Landis for Eugene and Cornelius Brothers for Hydrino. The kick-off track is another of the Franklin sisters, Erma this time, with the Jose Feliciano classic "Light My Fire". UK's Linda Lewis was way ahead of her time, fusing seemingly disparate musical elements together. Some listeners may know her collaboration with Midfield General on the chillout mix "Reach Out" but here you'll find Linda's original version called "Reach For The Truth" from her 1972 "Lark" album. Playing the reggae version of "Win Your Love For Me" made me think of the cracking Sam Cooke original. Then a side-track into a version of another Cooke song "You Send Me" featuring Bobby Hendricks and The Drifters from 1957-58. And just like Timi Yuro last time out I've been meaning to drop you a Roy Hamilton track for some time. And, as always if you know your musical history there is a connection between Sam Cooke and Roy Hamilton and here's the story. In late April 1956, Roy Hamilton cancelled a number of dates as he fell ill, suffering from pneumonia and also tuberculosis. On June 2, he stunned the music world as he announced his retirement from performing due to his illness and complete exhaustion. His absence from the music scene was to be for an indefinite period of time and he resumed his career as a painter which he had pursued before his singing talent made him a national star. But it was Hamilton's manager Bill Cook who who had first attempted to persuade Sam Cooke to leave gospel for pop as early as 1955, when he had tried to get him to sign with Atlantic Records! The Chiffons supplied me with my first ever music purchase and are deserving of a spot here. The Bob (Relf) & Earl (Nelson) track is the flip of "Harlem Shuffle" from 1964 - by the way, Earl Nelson went on to record "The Duck" as Jackie Lee in 1965! I just love this Ralfi Pagan rola "Loneliness, Loneliness". I really think Skip Mahoaney & The Casuals' "Wherever You Go" is as sweet as they come. Plus a few other gems that have caught my attention (again) in passing. So I guess, all in all, it's just a labour of love....
