25. Old Friends - Confesando
A little 411 on some of these tracks....
01. Charades - Treasure Of Love 1962 diggie, diggie, diggie dooooo Love the background!
From California's Central Valley in the late 50's, the original members of this solid vocal group first recorded in 1962 greatest success with "Please Be My Love Tonight" The Charades started in 1956 as the Latin Knights. In the early 60's they became the Charades and performed with and backed many rock and roll stars touring California.
02. Darrow Fletcher - Sitting There That Night 1966
Darrow Fletcher started singing when he was six years old.(born 23-January-1951 in Inkster, Michigan... (Rose Battiste's cousin)
He did this single on Jacklyn Records label & was a monster in Chicago, but never got much further than the city limits, due to Jacklyn Records small budget and despite all his recordings, he never made an album.
03. Occasions - Baby Don't Go 1967
A local group from Cleavland backed up by legendary Jim Brown of The Cleavland Browns, "Big Jim Records" had lofty goals of recording local talent and the Occasions, a relatively unknown group was the first act. The label, a subsidiary of Way Out Records, unleashed "Baby Don't Go" . While waiting for more releases, Big Jim left them high and dry by moving to Hollywood and not looking back.....Poor Dudes, Jive Jim :(
06. Intruders - Doctor, Doctor 1970
B side is When We Get Married as a 7", Single
The Intruders were the first group to score hits with the songwriting/production team of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, they played a major role in the rise of Philadelphia soul, These guys were originally formed as a doo wop group in 1960 which I love all their doowop & soul hits!
07. Eight Minutes - Will You Still Be Mine 1968
AKA The Soul Impacts, on Jay Pee label....This group was formed in 1967 ,the children of two Chicago families, another fav track was "Oh Yes I Do" also 1968
10. Dramatics - If You Haven't Got Love May of 67
The Masterkeys also recorded this gem a few months later in August of 67
both on Sport label. I like both versions but IMHO Dramatics did it a little better...
12. Dynamics - Ice Cream Song 1969
On Hacktone Records, All Detroit natives...the group was managed by Ted White, who was married to the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin....The Dynamics had three lead voices!
13. TnT Band - I Miss You 1969
Off The Meditation Album, Coming straight out of El Barrio and the streets of New York City, These guys were doing their own thang Latin style, they only recorded 3 albums over a 2 year period, The Meditation being their last. I fell in love with this song while I was at a friends house, I kept asking him to play this track over and over until I guess he couldn't take it no more and gave me the album which I still have :)
16. Montclairs - Ease The Pain no specific year, Guessing 1973
An East St. Louis Sweet Soul vocal group who were actually named after a local brand of cigarettes! They recorded their first single in 1969, which was only distributed in the St. Louis area, the Montclairs recorded some fine heartache ballads in the early '70s that deserved better fates than they got.
23. Vernon Green & The Medallions - Can You Talk? 1973
Can you say "scandalous" ? But I LOVE it!! They were the first Vocal Doowop group to record on Dootone Records in the late 50's.. Since the passing of Vernon Green in 2000, His brother Jimmy Green and Billy Foster have continued The Medallions without him, the group has been "Reconstituted", by several musicians and singers who backed up and/or recorded with Mr. Green prior to his death.
Kick back and enjoy!
