RossyBoy's Seventh Heaven Vol 7

I am kicking off this set with an old familiar song "Angel Baby" from 1960, but with a twist, as Rosie Hamlin sings in both Spanish and English on this unusual version. Later, I give a spin to the forgotten flip "Give Me Love" which has been one of my personal favourites since the Sixties. It seems to teeter on the brink of collapse from start to finish and I think it has a great story. Rosie described it thus. "We had completely forgotten about the flip side of the 45. Lucky for us, we had our old friend Blueford Wade along. He was a vocalist who sat in on gigs with us when he wasn't fronting his own band. Noah said "Hey Blueford, why don't you just ad-lib something." That's how Give Me Love made it on the B side." An advocate of this particular track was John Lennon himself. In an interview with Jonathon Cott published in Rolling Stone magazine in November 1968, he said "An amazing record. It's one of the greatest strange records; it's all just off beat and everybody misses it - they knocked off the B side in ten minutes. I talk Yoko's leg off telling her this is what it's all about." Hope you are all intrigued enough to hear it out. There are a few other unusual versions of more familiar songs in this set. We have a Muscle Shoals version of a Four Tops' classic; Major Lance, in his Okeh days, warming up "Nothing Can Stop Me" for Gene Chandler; and a Wisconsin version of "Forever" by The Mar-J's (thanks to Murderghost for putting me on to this one). There's Tavares' first outing under their own name after graduating from Chubby & The Turnpikes. And then as usual, some Latin, some Sweet Sounds, a Motown.......with one common factor, they're all full of soul! Heaven may not be for everyone, but I hope this set of soul stirrers will lift you up a lttle bit higher.
