Here's a a very good, rare album by THE CALIFORNIA PLAYBOYS titled "Trying To Become A Millionaire." This is an energetic northern soul LP with a hot rhythm section that can barely contain themselves, even on "Someone New", a tight ballad that may be the best cut. Every song is either a gem or deep cut waiting to be mined for soul/funk/r&b comps--though the sound is unmistakably early 70s, the drum and bass flirt with disco grooves. Lester Young is an exceptional singer but never overcompensates, and neither does the band, though all involved have the talent to do so. This could've easily been a known classic with the right promotion.
