RossyBoy's Founding Fathers Vol 36

Time to get ready for the weekend. Here are a few notes on this latest comp. Herman Griffin and Herman Lewis are one and the same guy and his claim to fame is that he was married to both Mary Wells and Gigi Griffin of the Charmaines (but not at the same time!). The Johnny and Jackey of track 17 are an early pairing of Johnny Bristol and Jackey Beavers on the Tri-Phi label from 1961. Diana Ross grabbed this one many years later! I have never really understood why Bobby Goldsboro is popular on the Northern Soul scene but there's one track, #11 here ( and probably the only one!) that, in my humble opinion is half decent. And finally just to say that track 19 is getting a lot of spins from me at the moment! Hope you all enjoy this set ....

RossyBoy's File Not Found Vol 34

My world was in disarray. First I found an untagged track in my files which even DustyRose can't name. And then, calamity of calamities, I discovered that Volume 18 of my compilations is missing. I searched high and low but it was nowhere to be found. Stupid me, of course, I thought that maybe it had never existed ! That's right - I thought I had just skipped right over volume number 18 ! Being too obsessive to let it go just like that, I made a Vol 18 to keep the set in sequence and complete. But as soon as I posted it today, benlynx (maybe my one and only true fan ?!? ) came straight back at me  with a comment to remind me about Biting Bullets Vol 18, missing from my hard drive! So it's actually Biting Bullets that is File Not Found, if you follow me ..... And now there are not one, but two, Volume 18s ! What a silly old Soulie  I am....LOL !!!

I have tried to rectify my mistake and I'm now calling this comp Vol 34  with a link for the revised cover below ! 

Just a note on the Little Anthony of Track 15 - it's not Anthony Gourdine from the Imperials, but rather Anthony Bellante from Dallas, Texas, and you may remember I featured the flip of this "Nobody But Me" on Look Both Ways Vol 25. I redressed the balance by putting a grown-up Anthony Gourdine track in at number 3 and a version of an Imperials' classic at number 10. Hope you all enjoy this additional entry in the archives !

RossyBoy's Caught Black Handed Vol 26

It was Lil'Cholo's mentioning his birthday that did it - made me realise that because it was before the 21st of January, he didn't quite make it into the Age of Aquarius, unlike me. So that made it easy for me to pick the opener for this set, "Aquarius" by the Undisputed Truth. I've put in the Johnny Truitt track at number 8 because in a recent poll of the best ever Deep Soul tracks it came out on top. Can't say that I think it's that great, or even very good, myself, but now at least you can make up your own minds. Which makes me think that a Deep Soul special must be on the cards because I've seen a couple of polls of the best-ever tracks of that genre recently and I wouldn't really have agreed with either of their results ! What else do we have ? Oh, yes - I've always been a big fan of Aretha's version of "Until You Come Back To Me" and I knew that Stevie Wonder wrote it, but I didn't realise that he had recorded it. Well, here it is ! Also, if you are a fan of that monster from a few years ago "Dilemma" by Kelly Rowland & Nelly, as I am, you'll find the Patti LaBelle track featured here very familiar. A number of versions make the playlist as you should have come to expect by now, plus some others that have crossed my mind when working on other projects. Enjoy!

RossyBoy's Look Both Ways Vol 25

January is named after the Roman god Janus, the god who looked both ways - back into the old year, and forward into the new. And that seems quite appropriate for contemplating our new blog. It's hard to believe that TVD and KLD were on their knees less than two weeks ago, despite their success. Already we are going from strength to strength and now that only proven dedicated enthusiasts of our fantastic musical heritage are on board, I think we are stronger than ever. So, in accordance with my New Year Resolution, I am plowing on with yet another episode of the long-running series of RossyBoy compilations. It's the usual mixture, with quite a few versions of well known songs this time. I had some ideas left over from my Double Cross venture with MELLO, so it was easy to include some classy leftovers from that project. (DustyRose and I are working on a new double cross project, so watch out for that coming up soon.) Track 3 here isn't Anthony Gourdine from the Imperials, but rather Anthony Bellante, who cut this deep obscurity in Dallas, Texas, as the flip of “You're My One And Only” on SHOW ART in 1967(?). But I do have another great version by Baby Washington of the Imperials' "I'm On The Outside (Looking In)" which I only acquired a couple of days ago. If you listen to Fannie & The Varcells at number 9, you may hear traces of the Imperials' "Tears On My Pillow" too. Many people think that Irma Thomas' version was the original of the Rolling Stones' "Time Is On My Side", but trumpeter Kai Winding beat her to the punch on this one, with the hard-to-find track featured here at number 7. I hope there is enough here to keep up the very high standard of UnderworldSoul4Life. Enjoy, and let me know what you think....

RossyBoy's Sole Survivors Vol. 24

Well, it’s the start of a whole new phase and the audience may well be even more discerning than before. But it’s great just to be back souldie-ring on (ouch!). And I thought it important to keep the momentum going, so I’ve quickly put this latest comp together and trust that the quality hasn’t suffered because of that. It has a bit of a Latin feel, with three tracks in Spanish and several with a Latin beat. At No. 3, we have the Spanish version of Two Tons of Love’s “What Good Am I Without You“. A lovely version follows of “On the Outside Looking In” by the inimitable Miracles. I’ve slipped in a couple of early Jimmy Hughes tracks. You’ll probably recognise a couple of my favorites, The Two Ronnies, Dyson and Walker. It’s hard to believe Ronnie Walker was just 15 when he recorded the spookily sad soul valediction “I’m Saying Goodbye” on the flip of his debut recording for Bell in 1966. As usual, there are a couple of unusual versions of familiar songs and some sweet slow jams. The closer by Rachelle Ferrell is from her 2000 album “Individuality (Can I Be Me?)“ so it’s anything but an oldie ! Suffice it to say, normal service has been resumed………

RossyBoy's New Year Resolution Vol. 23

Hogmanay is the Scottish drinking festival, known to the rest of the world as New Year’s Eve. A good time to look back on the Old Year, the first year of the TVD site and reflect on its many successes. It is fair to say we have established a good track record ! And also it is time to look forward to a bright New Year and anticipate more sweet tunes to come. So I’m resolved to keep on firing out compilations ‘til you listeners tell me stop or, since the comments are often silent, ‘til the downloads dry up. This, then, is my first offering of 2010. Two little themes in this one. First I saw how popular Little Julian Herrera’s tracks have been recently, so I thought I’d pop in a few. Track 18 is the original version of “Lonely, Lonely Nights” on the Dig label from 1956. In 1963, Lil Julian contacted The Illusions to back him up on a remake on the Essar label. Since I was harking on about Hogmanay, I thought I might bring you some blue-eyed soul from the Celtic Fringe as the secondary theme. The kick-off track from Glasgow funksters AWB probably sums up my 2010 Resolution nicely ! There’s another wee Glasgow “hairie” (Scottish slang equivalent of chola) in at No. 13, with Lulu’s take on “Here Comes The Night”, the classic by another Celt, Belfast’s Van Morrison. I have a Scottish beat version of the Northern Soul standard “Ain’t No Soul Left In These Ole Shoes” by the Beatstalkers. And an R&B classic by the Athenians, who were my regular Saturday night live music suppliers in the teen clubs of Edinburgh, which is known as the “Athens of the North”. I’ve thrown in some other names that have popped up in other people’s comps recently, and a few that appeared at some time on my playlists over the holidays. I’m particularly fond of this Dee Dee Sharp version of the Neil Sedaka classic “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do”. Whatever your aspirations and resolutions for 2010, remember the final track and sing along with Eleanor Grant….”Yes You Can“. A Happy Listening and Soulful New Year to you all !!!

RossyBoy's Natural Facts Vol 22

I'm usually keeping a couple of comps on the simmer - a bit like cooking. I throw in a nice track here and an interesting rola there as they appeal to me. I had the makings of a pre-Christmas soul meal but was lacking a couple of ingredients. And then that little debate on Soloe's last unknown gave me the spices I needed to finish off this repast.So in went a Richard Dimples Field pinch of light funk. And the final taster was a version of his "One Bad Habit" from Betty Wright. So, added to the other versions included (as you should expect from one of my comps) and some other sweet tunes, I hope you will find this a tasty little snack before you settle in to all that Christmas turkey, pudding and carols.

RossyBoy's Christmas Crackers Vol 21

Winter comes early in the Canadian north. That may be why our Mountie Man Scavenjah got in early with his pre-emptive strike. And he had plenty of goodies in his Santa sack. It's hard to follow that, especially when you don't want to go for the common pickings from "Soul Christmas", "Motown Christmas" and "Blues & Soul Christmas". So I had to slip and slide all over the place to pick up these gifts for our listeners. A bit of Doo-wop, a few Northern, some Modern and some classic Sixties and Seventies - phew, sounds a bit like one of those eclectic RossyBoy comps again! Even a Spanish rola to wish a Feliz Navidad to our O.G. listeners. And, of course, we wish a Cool Yule to everybody else!

RossyBoy's Biting Bullets Vol 18

I'm kicking off this time with some sweet reggae, but the inspiration for quite a few of the tracks here came from my fellow crew members. Billymac brought me back in mind of Ronnie Walker and here's the slightly longer single version of "Guess I'll Never Understand", under the name of Fletcher Walker III. I am so taken with Ronnie's voice, I'm bringing you another great track of his "Really, Really Love You". OED gave you some "Stax on Motown" on his "Love Me Again" comp, but long before Stax did it, we had "Goldwax on Motown" in the form of James Carr duetting on the Tops' "Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch". ScavenJah was blowing our minds with some "TnT", so here's their classic "Meditation". SOLOE put me on to the Jive Five & Chantels version of "Don't Believe Him Donna" (which I've now managed to pick up), but here's the song's writer, Lenny Miles, backed with the Shirelles. My closing rola is the original of "Got To Get Through To You" after the G MAN came through with the Lee Fields' version. There are a couple of familiar songs in here but in an international setting. We have the Italian stallion, Nino Tempo and sister April on an understated version of "Land of 1000 Dances", which Thee Midniters were first to record. And very probably listeners like Skiny and Max will recognise "The French James Brown", Moroccan-born Vigon, with his charming version of "Harlem Shuff-EL" from 1967. This cat is still strutting it to this day. I remember being in Paris in 1969, not long after the student riots, and the clubs were fantastic, with James Brown pumping out funky stuff all night long; gorgeous women - Ooh, La, La!, the French always loved their soul music. I've got a Drifters' retro classic from 1964 with Charlie Thomas, magnificent, on lead. And the most unusual of all, since it's not on any record or CD; a mighty a capella performance by the Persuasions of Dee Dee Gartrell's Hymn No.9 (which I brought you last time), live from a concert in the Empire Theatre, Liverpool, UK, in 1973. Just how good were these guys - simply awesome! As my man MELLO said, another mixed bag comp in the RossyBoy style - maybe a bit more A La Carte than usual - hope it's to your taste!

RossyBoy's Crying Time Vol 17

Say hello to my Muerto. She's been with me since Hallowe'en. I think SOLOE sent her to me. She was a Sad Girl and pretty, but disconcerting too. She gave me quite a bit of help with this comp, but I hope she goes back where she came from soon...... I recently dusted off "The Soul Book" which I bought in 1975. The four authors each give a list of their 20 all-time favorite tracks, and the most interesting one for me was by Tony Cummings, founder of Soul Music magazine in UK. The Trumains track here is on Tony's list; and also the anti-war anthem from Delia "Dee Dee" Gartrell. All in all, the book was an interesting view of the state of "Soul" music back then - most of those favorites would be very well known to us today. In 2008, Delia's husband The Mighty Hannibal produced a CD compilation of tracks by her called Starting A Movement. If there is interest, I may post up that CD sometime soon. I've got another superb track from the Chiffons this time. The other purchase I made on my record buying debut was "Our Day Will Come" by Ruby & The Romantics, so I thought a great track from them would be a worthy addition. And then a little dedication to welcome new team member "billymac", from Tammi Terrell. It will be the first anniversary of Dimas Garza's death next week, so a class rola from the man is in order. Uncle Ray Charles was never sure where to draw the line between country and soul; same for Solomon Burke, Freddy Fender and many others, especially the Southern soulsters. So maybe it's not too much of a surprise to see little Brenda Lee kicking off - with that great voice and the Dave Berry hit from the early 60's, I've always liked this one. And seeing us out, we have Little Joe Hernandez showing he is still cutting it. So, get serious and shed a few tears while listening to this one....
