The Replies Project Vol. 1

It was back in August that ScavenJah first came up with the idea of the Replies Project, a compilation of answer songs. Of course, it's been done a few times before, but the TVD team always brings some new additional dimensions to old chestnuts, whether it's unusual versions or just plain rare oldies. So other members of the team chipped in with ideas and tracks, but like all things in life, distractions set in and it has taken a while to start to bring it to fruition. But quite a few interesting rolas are waiting to see the light of day and we expect this compilation to be the first of several, so watch out for more in the New Year. We hope this first one gives you some listening pleasure over the holday period. Enjoy!

LOCO TIME OLDIES - FOOLISH TOMORROW VOL. 1

Here's a short & sweet......and when I say sweet I mean very sweet....comp put together by myself and three of the TVD veteranos.....SCAVENJAH, SOLOE & MELLO. With a lineup like that there isn't really any explanation needed about the quality of this CD. Download this bad boy, get in that kick back mode, pop a cold one and get ready to float in the clouds.....flying high has never been so sweet.

An extra big thanks goes out to DJ SCAVENJAH for taking the time to organize, edit, tag and upload the link.

After experiencing this special piece of underworld soul history if you feel the love....give us a little bit of love back in the comment section.

G MAN

Here’s some reconnaissance material:

Johnny Neel and the Shapes of Soul
Born and Raised in Wilmington, Delaware, Johnny Neel cut his first single at the age of twelve, as Johnny Neel and The Shapes Of Soul.

Johnny Neel was born June 11, 1954 and became blind shortly after his birth. His first band was "Johnny Neel and the Shapes of Soul," with whom he cut a single at the age of 12. He later formed a band with his two brothers called "Internal Calm." He attended St. Mark's High School in Wilmington, Delaware.

Johnny is an accomplished songwriter whose tunes have been recorded by the likes of the Allman Brothers, Joe Louis Walker, John Mayall, Irma Thomas, Ann Peebles, Marie Osmond, the Oak Ridge Boys and Travis Tritt.

The Four Mints
The Four Mints (also known simply as the Mints) were a true oddity, a respected white vocal group in the midst of the early rock & roll era, capable of doing convincing R&B. James Wilson (lead), Gene Warr (first tenor), Aubie McSwain (second tenor), and Al Warr (bass) had known each other since childhood and sung together for years, throughout the '40s. Their main influence was gospel music, and they'd sung in churches for most of their lives. They quartet had sung locally around Center, TX, mostly at local events and church functions.

They took on the name the Four Mints and crossed over into popular music and R&B in 1954-1955. They'd always listened to the black R&B vocal groups of the period and proved good -- even inspired -- students: unlike, say, the Crew Cuts, the Four Mints didn't "bleach" out the sounds that they learned to create, but kept them intact even as they made them their own. They were, in many respects, the group equivalent of the phenomenon that Sam Phillips claims to have been searching for, a white man who could sing black music.

Little Joe & The Latinaires
Little Joe & La Familia has been one of the most popular Tex-Mex bands in the music industry. Little Joe has been entertaining for more than 40 years and has been described as the "KING OF THE BROWN SOUND". He has also helped pioneer "Tejano" music, a mix of traditional "norteƱo", country, blues and rock styles.

Jose Maria DeLeon Hernandez, "Little Joe", was born to Salvador "La Cotorra" Hernandez and Amelia DeLeon Hernandez in a three-wall dirt floor garage in Temple, Texas on a cold stormy night on October 17,1940. He was the 7th child of 13.

When Joe was 13, his cousin, David Coronado, recruited him for guitar, Cino Moreno on drums and Tony Matamoros on saxophone to join his band "David Coronado & The Latinaires".

At age 15 he had his first performance in Cameron, Texas for $5.00 at a high school Sock Hop. He was so excited, he realized that picking guitars beat cotton picking - and he could actually get paid for it!

He made his recording debut in 1958 on Terro Records in Corpus Christi, Texas, as a guitarist on an instrumental single "Safari part 1 and 2" composed by the members of the Latinaires. A year later, Jesse, Joe's young brother who was a bassist, singer and songwriter joined the band. Since David Coronado was leaving, Joe took over the band renaming it "Little Joe & The Latinaires".

Dianne and Carole with the Latin Whatchamacallits
Dianne and Carole with the Latin Whatchamacallits’ Feeling The Pain. One of the very few female-lead New York Latin albums of that era, the LP itself offered no details of who Dianne and Carole were (not even their last names) nor who played on it. Marin is credited for some of the songwriting but even he doesn’t remember working on it or who else may have. Subsequent interviews with other Speed artists yielded no other details either. Given that the LP cover was a close-up of an eyeball (the first three Speed LPs were all fairly abstract in their cover art), we don’t know what they looked like. Regardless, “The Fuzz” off that LP has become its best known single; a slinky Latin soul number with vibrant organ and horns.

Gigi and the Charmaines
Gigi and the Charmaines’ brief and only Billboard chart appearance at #117 in 1961 doesn’t reflect the trio’s great solo work on six different labels, nor does it take into account their work backing Lonnie Mack (the CD includes his Baby What’s Wrong, Oh I Apologize and Say Something Nice To Me) or their singing behind artists that included Little Willie John, James Brown, Bobby Freeman, Conway Twitty, Gary U.S. Bonds and Hawkshaw Hawkins at the King Records’ studio. These acheivements made them Cincinnati’s top girl group. Gigi Griffin, nee Marian Jackson, the Charmaines lead singer, helps to tell the story of the group in Mick Patrick’s informative sleevenotes. How, for instance, they won a recording contract with Fraternity Records on a local televised talent show. The CD includes the group’s debut 1960 Fraternity 45 from late 1960 Rockin’ Old Man backed with If You Were Mine, for which Gigi wrote the lyrics. More 45s, including What Kind Of Girl (Do You Think I Am), which topped a rival version from Erma Franklin in the summer of 1961, followed and they worked on local dance party shows “...just like Bandstand, but local” including the one hosted by Nick Clooney ‘that’s George Clooney’s dad!’ Gigi said.

Sag War Fare
Sag War Fare is a really mysterious vocal harmony group from Orlando in the early ’70s. This song is almost bordering on being a ballad. It’s something you snap your fingers and sway a little bit to. But the vocal is just so amazing. It really carries you through, captivating you from beginning to end.

RossyBoy's Natural Facts Vol 22

I'm usually keeping a couple of comps on the simmer - a bit like cooking. I throw in a nice track here and an interesting rola there as they appeal to me. I had the makings of a pre-Christmas soul meal but was lacking a couple of ingredients. And then that little debate on Soloe's last unknown gave me the spices I needed to finish off this repast. So in went a Richard Dimples Field pinch of light funk. And the final taster was a version of his "One Bad Habit" from Betty Wright. So, added to the other versions included (as you should expect from one of my comps) and some other sweet tunes, I hope you will find this a tasty little snack before you settle in to all that Christmas turkey, pudding and carols.

Track List
01 - Private Charles Bowen & The Gentlemen From Tigerland - Christmas In Vietnam
02 - Cicero Blake - Don't Do This To Me
03 - Renaldo Domino - You Don't Love Me No More

ROSE BATTISTE.....DETROIT EMPRESS

Rose Battiste was born in Detroit in 1947 and grew-up on the Motor City's east side with her sister and two brothers. Her mother, who was a frustrated entertainer, encouraged her young daughter to try and make it as a professional singer. At 15 she made her recording debut in the Continental studio on 12th Street, where Don Mancha produced a song called I'm Yours For A Lifetime for local musical entrepreneur Sam Motley. Rose remembers that, "My whole family came to the session and my grandmother took off her shoes and danced across the floor." But sadly the song doesn't seem to have made it onto any of Sam's various record labels, such as SA-MO or M & M.

After leaving school one afternoon she walked across Grand River, to number 6519, where she had an impromptu audition at the Thelma Recording Company's store front office.
Her warm reception made her start hanging out at the mom and pop operation, eventually teaming up with writer - producer Don Davis, and Joey "Kingfish". Rose joined other Thelma recording artists on gigs around Detroit, most notably at the famed 20 Grand on 14th Street. Radio-jock Martha Jean "The Queen" started hosting sock-hops in the club's Gold Room that were titled Monday Night Swing. Rose's two Thelma sides were recorded at Detroit's United Sound Studios on 2nd Avenue when she was just 16 years old. I Can't Leave You has Don Davis' customary stamp of high quality, with watertight production and a strong beat that typifies the emerging Detroit sound.

The flip, Someday, belies Rose's tender age and she told me how she overcame her teenage shyness to deliver such a vocal punch, "Mrs. Coleman said to me, 'turn around with your back to us and face the wall,' and that's how I did it!"

Unfortunately the 45, like other Thelma releases, didn't achieve the success that it deserved. Once things started to dissolve at Thelma, Rose followed Don to the Golden World studios on West Davison, where he'd established a new base.

Her Ric-Tic sides were co-written by Bob Hamilton, who told Rose to sing Holding Hands straight, without infusing any passion, or as he put it, "Blues-ing it up."
This Ric-Tic release immediately followed the successful records Hungry for Love and Edwin Starr's Agent 0-0-Soul, which inevitably shoved Rose's 45 into promotional oblivion.

Her next release on Golden World, Sweetheart Darling which has a Diana Ross sound.

Golden World had become too Motown-esque for Berry Gordy's liking; he bought Mr. Ed Wingate's company in September of 1966 and the take-over left most of his artists searching for a new recording home.

Rose again followed Don Davis, this time to Solid Hitbound, a production company that had been formed at Golden World with ex-radio DJ LeBaron Taylor and station manager George White. Their labels included Groovesville, Revilot and Solid Hit and boasted George Clinton, Mike Terry and other talented Detroit musicians and writers.

Rose's tremendous up-tempo Revilot double-sider, I Miss My Baby b/w Hit And Run, followed in the wake of Darrell Banks' hugely popular Open The Door To Your Heart (Revilot 201). Steve Mancha's Don't Make Me A Storyteller (Groovesville 1005) also proved to be a big regional hit, so it was another case of being in the right place at the wrong time. The company's promotion drive was focused on these two 45s, leaving hers to sink without trace.

Consequently it's now a highly sought-after disc.

The Parliament's Top 20 smash I Wanna Testify (Revilot 207), was released simultaneously to her underrated I'll Still Wait For You and unkindly condemned it to the land of flops. Rose's fine vocal delivery and the polished work of Mike Terry and Leon Ware deserved better.

1. I Miss My Baby
2. Holding Hands
3. Come Back In A Hurry
4. I Still Wait For You
5. Hit & Run
6. That's What He Told Me
7. Someday
8. Sweetheart Darling
9. I Just Can't Leave You

A little 411 on some of these tracks....

01. Charades - Treasure Of Love 1962 diggie, diggie, diggie dooooo Love the background!
From California's Central Valley in the late 50's, the original members of this solid vocal group first recorded in 1962 greatest success with "Please Be My Love Tonight" The Charades started in 1956 as the Latin Knights. In the early 60's they became the Charades and performed with and backed many rock and roll stars touring California.

02. Darrow Fletcher - Sitting There That Night 1966
Darrow Fletcher started singing when he was six years old.(born 23-January-1951 in Inkster, Michigan... (Rose Battiste's cousin)
He did this single on Jacklyn Records label & was a monster in Chicago, but never got much further than the city limits, due to Jacklyn Records small budget and despite all his recordings, he never made an album.

03. Occasions - Baby Don't Go 1967
A local group from Cleavland backed up by legendary Jim Brown of The Cleavland Browns, "Big Jim Records" had lofty goals of recording local talent and the Occasions, a relatively unknown group was the first act. The label, a subsidiary of Way Out Records, unleashed "Baby Don't Go" . While waiting for more releases, Big Jim left them high and dry by moving to Hollywood and not looking back.....Poor Dudes, Jive Jim :(

06. Intruders - Doctor, Doctor 1970
B side is When We Get Married as a 7", Single
The Intruders were the first group to score hits with the songwriting/production team of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, they played a major role in the rise of Philadelphia soul, These guys were originally formed as a doo wop group in 1960 which I love all their doowop & soul hits!

07. Eight Minutes - Will You Still Be Mine 1968
AKA The Soul Impacts, on Jay Pee label....This group was formed in 1967 ,the children of two Chicago families, another fav track was "Oh Yes I Do" also 1968

10. Dramatics - If You Haven't Got Love May of 67
The Masterkeys also recorded this gem a few months later in August of 67
both on Sport label. I like both versions but IMHO Dramatics did it a little better...

12. Dynamics - Ice Cream Song 1969
On Hacktone Records, All Detroit natives...the group was managed by Ted White, who was married to the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin....The Dynamics had three lead voices!

13. TnT Band - I Miss You 1969
Off The Meditation Album, Coming straight out of El Barrio and the streets of New York City, These guys were doing their own thang Latin style, they only recorded 3 albums over a 2 year period, The Meditation being their last. I fell in love with this song while I was at a friends house, I kept asking him to play this track over and over until I guess he couldn't take it no more and gave me the album which I still have :)

16. Montclairs - Ease The Pain no specific year, Guessing 1973
An East St. Louis Sweet Soul vocal group who were actually named after a local brand of cigarettes! They recorded their first single in 1969, which was only distributed in the St. Louis area, the Montclairs recorded some fine heartache ballads in the early '70s that deserved better fates than they got.
23. Vernon Green & The Medallions - Can You Talk? 1973
Can you say "scandalous" ? But I LOVE it!! They were the first Vocal Doowop group to record on Dootone Records in the late 50's.. Since the passing of Vernon Green in 2000, His brother Jimmy Green and Billy Foster have continued The Medallions without him, the group has been "Reconstituted", by several musicians and singers who backed up and/or recorded with Mr. Green prior to his death.

Kick back and enjoy!

RossyBoy's Reggae Rolas Vol 20

I've been threatening to post a set of reggae tracks for some time, so after a hectic flurry of activity on the site in November, now seems as good a time as any. Quite a few of the names here have been mentioned over the months. The opener by Glen Miller is not great quality but it is quite rare so worth an inclusion. There are a few reggae versions of classic soul songs, plus a couple of soul songs from reggae artists. Beres Hammond is featured so at least our regular listener Eugene will be happy! This may not be your usual listening fare but open your hearts and your minds - at least that beat will help you relax !

Track list

01 - Glen Miller - Dungeon

02 - Audrey - You'll Lose A Good Thing

03 - Beres Hammond - Don't Play With My Heart

04 - Jackie Edwards - Come To Me Softly

05 - Beres Hammond & Marcia Griffiths - Live On

06 - Glen Miller - Love & Understanding

07 - L. Crosdale - Set Me Free

08 - Busty Brown - Aware Of Love

09 - Hortense Ellis - I'm Still In Love

10 - Beres Hammond - Oh I Miss You

11 - Glen Miller - Where Is The Love

12 - Pat Kelly - How Long (Will It Take)

13 - Delroy Wilson - I'm Still Waiting

14 - Alton Ellis & Hortense Ellis - Don't Gamble With Love

15 - Beres Hammond & Marcia Griffiths - Live On

16 - Glen Miller - You Must Be Love

17 - Beres Hammond - They Gonna Talk

18 - Jackie Edwards & Judy Mowatt - In Paradise

19 - Jean Adebambo - Say That You Love Me

20 - Bitty McLean - Walk Away From Love

Apologies - tracks 5 and 15 are duplicates, but with different filenames. Hopefully you'll think it's a good enough track to bear hearing twice !
