Just a little about these tracks...
01. Startells - You're Wrong About Me I Don't remember much about this record except The dark pink label & the B Side of "Falling In Love With You Girl" One of my fav cuz I love thier echoing & taunting mellow sound...
03. Gallahads - Sad Girl
Heres a little info I learned about this record on Beechwood label also Art Laboe's Starla label...at the time this record was realeased a group "The Chants" became The Gallahads, but after 2 releases from the unofficial Gallahads, The Orignal Jimmy Pikin Gallahads did the rest of the hit ballads..But still in all what a original "Sad Girl" from 1960 soon followed by many Artist/Groups!
04. Monitors - Since I Lost You Girl ever come home from buying a record & play the B side first cuz we already know what the A side sounds like? well this is one of those records that became a upbeat fav of mine, I normally don't like fast upbeat songs but this is one of those that caught my ear...Greetings (This Is Uncle Sam) as you know is the A side...
05. Jaggerz - It's Gonna Take A Miracle - I'm On The Outside Looking In
Lead singer from this group is Jimmy Ross, The Girl singer is no other than
Donna Groom from the Skyliners group, another great voice...
11. Lezlie Valentine - Love On A Two Way Street was written by Sylvia Robinson in 1968. This song was originally recorded by Lezli Valentine, was then recorded by The Moments in 1970...
20. Vibrations - Take a Step in My Direction ( Aesop's Fables cut 67') were aka Jayhawks & Marathons) They never had a hit but they made it to r&b & pop charts...
21. Intruders - Just A Little Devil With An Angel's Smile
I remember the grunts I made when I pulled this record from my 45's...dang thing had a bigass crack in it :( but thanks to one of my DJ contacts, I was able to get a nice copy of this 1966 favorite...
25. Mary Wells & Smokey Robinson - I Want You Around
Before Marvin & Kim & The Royal Jesters there was...
Mary & Smokey who produced this fav in 63 (anyone have other versions? please let me know) I Love this song..
Again, Big thanks to RossyBoy for this awsome cover,
I love it so much I'm gonna use it one more time!
Ok there you have it!, Enjoy!!

Lil'Cholo's Cali Boy Memories Vol. 3
OK Ladies & Gentlemen,
On this one, well, it's very similar to Vol. 2. I was originally gonna make Vol. 2 a 2 Disc Special using these songs for Disc 2 but decided to just go ahead and put them on their own comp.
Anyhow, on here you will find two songs which in my honest opinion should be a part of everyone's favorites when it comes to oldies. Those two would be Track #6 "Duke of Earl" by Gene Chandler and Track #9 "Angel Baby" by Rosie & The Originals. Now you tell me, what guy doesn't love cruising while listening to Duke of Earl? That song makes you feel like you're the shiznit. If you know any Spanish at all, I'd say this is like the American version of Vicente Fernandez' "El Rey" and who doesn't like Rosie and that beautiful voice telling you, you're her Angel Baby? I really never knew what Rosie looked like till one day I cam across one of her albums on another site. Dayom, she's one hot mamma jamma. Oh well, like I said, it's my opinion but you have to admit those have to be on the top of your list somehwere.
OK, now moving on back to the comp, I ended this one the way I ended Vol. 2, with a live version of a great song. This time, it is Betty Wright singing "Tonight is The Night". This song also has to be up there on my lists of all time greats. I love how she's telling the story of this song and how she messes with the crowd, etc...As to when she gets down to actually sining the song itself, all I can say is WOW! This song talks about something we have all probably gone through and if you've heard it, you know what I'm talking about, if you haven't, you're in for a special treat.
I started this comp off with the flip side of Patti Drew's 45 "Tell Him" which happens to be "Working on a Groovy Thing". Both of these songs are on the top of my faves with "Tell Him" being a bit higher on my list. Don't know what other songs she put out back in her day but "Working on a Groovy Thing" and "Tell Him" are an awesome duo.
The rest of the songs are probably pretty well known, a couple Brenton Wood songs, a couple more Billy Stewart, and a couple more of Mary Wells. Mixed in you will find The McCoys "Hang on Sloopy" which was a crowd favorite back in the day and then we have Lynda Jones' "Hypnotized". I don't know why but I always thought it was sung by a young guy. Boy was I wrong. LOL! We also have Barabara Lynn's "You'll Lose a Good Thing" and if you have a wife like mine, that song is pretty much right on target.
Last but not least, I have to mention The Orlon's "Mr Twenty One". Who here didn't play that song on their 21st B'day or wish they had? Makes it seem like it was composed just for you on your 21st B'day, doesn't it? Ahhh, if I could only be 21 again. Anyhow, I couldn't get a good copy for this one but I have to take this time to give Roxio some props. Y'see, this song sounded as if I were listening to it right off an old record player. Well, I have Roxio Creator 2009 and it has a sound editor program which allowed me to clean up the song by removing the hiss and little cracks and all I had to do was click on a button and it did it all by itself. I also used RC2009's Track Editing software to tag all the songs, add the cover, etc... I've been using Roxio for years now and I use it to burn all my CD's. It's truly top of the line once you get to know it. Anyhow, major props to this software. I highly recommend it.
Well, this might be my last comp for a while cause the crew already put out all the good stuff. LOL! But seriously, I really don't have the knowledge of the music that these guys do and what I do have are mostly my own favorites. Alot of these have already come out in a few comps so I really don't want to keep putting up comps with what will probably be the same music over and over. I was actually gonna wait to put this one out but decided what the heck, it's ready so might as well get it over with. I might do another Tejano Oldies and maybe a couple with the 70's-80's theme but as far as oldies go, I might have one more at most. We'll see. Oh, and feel free to ask for my assistance on anything you need, If I can help you, I will. I have some great graphic programs as well as that Roxio program so if you need help on a cover, drop me an email.
Enjoy!
~Lil'Cholo

RossyBoy's Moving Pictures Vol 16
Putting together a comp is more of an art than a science. In this case we start with some duties and obligations, in the form of some requests - so there's Joya Landis for Eugene and Cornelius Brothers for Hydrino. The kick-off track is another of the Franklin sisters, Erma this time, with the Jose Feliciano classic "Light My Fire". UK's Linda Lewis was way ahead of her time, fusing seemingly disparate musical elements together. Some listeners may know her collaboration with Midfield General on the chillout mix "Reach Out" but here you'll find Linda's original version called "Reach For The Truth" from her 1972 "Lark" album. Playing the reggae version of "Win Your Love For Me" made me think of the cracking Sam Cooke original. Then a side-track into a version of another Cooke song "You Send Me" featuring Bobby Hendricks and The Drifters from 1957-58. And just like Timi Yuro last time out I've been meaning to drop you a Roy Hamilton track for some time. And, as always if you know your musical history there is a connection between Sam Cooke and Roy Hamilton and here's the story. In late April 1956, Roy Hamilton cancelled a number of dates as he fell ill, suffering from pneumonia and also tuberculosis. On June 2, he stunned the music world as he announced his retirement from performing due to his illness and complete exhaustion. His absence from the music scene was to be for an indefinite period of time and he resumed his career as a painter which he had pursued before his singing talent made him a national star. But it was Hamilton's manager Bill Cook who who had first attempted to persuade Sam Cooke to leave gospel for pop as early as 1955, when he had tried to get him to sign with Atlantic Records! The Chiffons supplied me with my first ever music purchase and are deserving of a spot here. The Bob (Relf) & Earl (Nelson) track is the flip of "Harlem Shuffle" from 1964 - by the way, Earl Nelson went on to record "The Duck" as Jackie Lee in 1965! I just love this Ralfi Pagan rola "Loneliness, Loneliness". I really think Skip Mahoaney & The Casuals' "Wherever You Go" is as sweet as they come. Plus a few other gems that have caught my attention (again) in passing. So I guess, all in all, it's just a labour of love....
Track List
01 - Erma Franklin - Light My Fire
02 - Linda Lewis - Reach For The Truth
03 - Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose - Don't Ever Be Lonely (A Poor Little Fool Like Me)
04 - Roy Hamilton - Let The Music Play
05 - Johnny Adams - Neither One of Us Wants To Be The First To Say Goodbye
06 - Ralfi Pagan - Loneliness, Loneliness
07 - Perfections - The Long Twine
08 - Sam Cooke - Win Your Love For Me
09 - The Chiffons - Dream, Dream, Dream
10 - Mary Gresham - I'll Never Let You Walk Alone
11 - Don Covay & The Goodtimers - Iron Out The Rough Spots
12 - Ella Johnson & The Buddy Johnson Orchestra - Goodbye Baby Here I Go
13 - Bob & Earl - I'll Come Running Back
14 - Joya Landis - Out The Light
15 - Four Sonics - If It Wasn't For My Baby
16 - Joe Bataan - I'll Be Sweeter Tomorrow
17 - Skip Mahoaney & The Casuals - Wherever You Go
18 - The Drifters - You Send Me
19 - TNT Band - Mr. Slick
20 - Barbara Lynn - Moving On A Groove

Lil'Cholo's Cali Boy Memories Vol. 2
OK folks, here it is...
The much anticipated and long awaited, Lil'Cholo's Cali Boy Memories Vol. 2.
I have to apologize to the crew for taking so long on this one but as I explained to some of them, I'm very busy during football season. What can I say, I love my football plus I have a daughter, a senior in High School and that alone is alot to deal with. She's a smart one and I have to keep up with her and her future. She's got alot to deal with, getting everything ready for college, taking tests, etc...My head is spinning just trying to keep up with her, taking her here and there. Aye, ya, yaye!
Anyhow, In this comp you will find a few of my all time favorite oldies and of course, like in my first comp, they are from my younger days while living in Cali. In those days, cruising to Avocado Lake on Sundays was a weekly event. When not cruising to the Lake, we'd go to Kearney Park just outside of Fresno. Both were the place to be back in the day. We would be Q'ing it up, getting together with the famili and friends, etc... At the Lake it was fishing, playing baseball with whoever gathered around, swimming, or cruising with the homies. At Kearney Park, it was more of the same without any fishing or swimming as there was no lake there. This comp is dedicated to those days where Sundays were the day everybody couldn't wait to arrive.
Those days were cool because you didn't need to go to a car show to see all the beautiful ramflas hopping it and scraping it while cruising around the scene, not to mention the firme hynas all the homies had at their sides, we'd hope they took their carnalitas with them, if y'know what I mean. All the bombitas and trokitas with their two-tone paint jobs were a site to see as well plus the wonderful murals on some of them, the graphics, etc...
Ahhhh, the memories! Anyhow, on this comp you will find some long lost rolas that I had to bring back to the onda here at TVD. One song I fell in love with the very first time I heard it was Patti Drew's "Tell Him". The voice, the emotion, the words, hijole, it just got to you. Another long lost song which I just came across a few months ago by accident was Sun's "I Had a Choice". I had completely forgotten about this song. Boy, was I glad I found it, as soon as I played it, the words were all just there in the back of my mind as if it were back in the days when I would sing along to this song. I was truly amazed at how I never forgot the words of this song. I put this one first to get you in the mood for the rest of the comp. I truly hope you all enjoy this one. One song that is never forgotten but I have grown to enjoy more and more the more I listen to it is Sly, Slick, & Wicked's "Confessin' A Feeling(Live)". I've burned some comps for myself in the past and usually have this one first but decided I'd save the best one for last on this comp. Of course, a few of the songs are well known but they are some of my favs so I had to add them on here as well.
As for the cover on this one and how big the difference is between this one and Vol. 1, well, I started noticing the TVD crew's latest work and became sort of jealous of all their awesome covers and decided I would try to outdo(more like keep up with) my homies on this one. I know it's gonna be hard because some of these guys work hard at what they do and have been doing it for awhile now but I gave it my best, hope you enjoy it as much as you do the songs. The graphics also deal more with the theme of the comp as well. Heck, I think I gave the Eastside Story covers a run for their money. LOL!
Oh well, I hope everyone enjoys this one and be on the lookout for Vol. 3 which will be coming out pretty soon, it will be very similar to this one as far as the theme goes. Bobby, please keep away from this one, it's for the homies that aren't gonna try to make a profit off of it. Feel free to enjoy it like everyone else if you want but keep it off eBay. This one will be without any password protection so first come first serve. I'd also like to welcome DustyRose to the crew. Glad to have you aboard and awesome first comp!
~Lil'Cholo

JAMES BROWN TAKE A LOOK AT THOSE CAKES
Since this is a soul site, I thought it would be appropriate to post something by "The Godfather of Soul", James Brown. Acclaimed as one of the most influental "soul" artists of all-time, he managed to have more charted hits than most other artists. He began his musical legacy with his first charted hit in the spring of '56 with Please, Please, Please.
Hey, with a vast library of material & many reissued albums on cd, what does one pick for a post?
I chose this obscure album from 1978 that has never been reissued.
The first track almost reached the half way point of the top 100 though.
In keeping with the "MELLO" theme...the reason for my having this album is for track 3 (Someone To Talk To). Whatever the flava...enjoy!
1. For Goodness Sakes, Look At Those Cakes
2. A Man Understands
3. Someone To Talk To
4. Spring
5. As Long As I Love You

Now for something a little bit different; in response to a comment by Eugene on my last comp, here's this 1969 12-track compilation vinyl LP - the debut in the classic Trojan series. Reggae rhythm and sunshine make a sweet combination. Eugene's favorite "Kansas City" by Joya Landis is here but the stand-outs for me are Derrick Harriott's "Fat Man" and George A. Penny's top version of Sam Cooke's "Win Your Love (For Me)".
Track List
A1 - Untouchables - Tighten Up
A2 - Joya Landis - Kansas CityA3 - Val Bennet - Spanish Harlem
A4 - David Isaacs - Place In The Sun
A5 - George A. Perry - Win Your Love
A6 - Brother Dan All Stars - Donkey Returns

I Guess That Don't Make Me A Loser - THE BROTHERS OF SOUL
Another tight drop for the listeners 2nite, brought to you by my partner The San Antonio Sniper.....Pobre' Riche. The Brothers of Soul were a vocal trio composed of Fred Bridges, Richard Knight, and Bobby Eaton, who released several singles in a smooth, uptown, Motown-derived vein. Their biggest hit was 1968's "I Guess That Don't Make Me a Loser," released on Boo Records, which scraped the lower reaches of the R&B Top 40. It has since become a soul collectible, and also gained the group a following among the Latino community in Southern California. Some of their other single releases included "Can't Get You Off of My Mind and "Candy." Bridges, Knight, and Eaton also worked as a songwriting team, most prominently for Ruby Andrews during the late '60s. By the mid-'70s, the Brothers of Soul had broken up; Eaton became a session singer, while Bridges and Knight continued on as songwriters, getting a couple of compositions recorded by the Four Tops.

WHAT LOVE HAS JOINED TOGETHER - SMOKEY ROBINSON AND THE MIRACLES
Due 2 technical difficulties the 1st link offered up on this album was not working properly. The problem has been corrected thanks to the up North homie....DJ SCAVENJAH. Thanks for having my back brother....also a shout out goes to my partner ROSSYBOY 4 sending me an alert also.
What Love Has...Joined Together was a 1970 album by R&B group The Miracles (aka "Smokey Robinson & The Miracles") on Motown Records' Tamla label (TS301). A special concept album consisting solely of six extended- length love songs, it charted at #97 on the Billboard Top 200 Album chart, and reached the Top 10 of Billboard's R&B album chart. This album was unique in that it had no single releases. The Miracles do some of their all-time best singing on this album , with rich, lush musical orchestration.

THE SUPERBS GREATEST HITS

From our man out of Sacramento....PANCHO.......comes a very tight cd for the listeners....The Greatest Hits Of The Superbs.
The Superbs, from California, USA, were one of the best mid-60s sweet-soul groups to meld doo-wop harmonies into the sound of soul. The members were Eleanor ‘Punkin’ Green’ (lead), Walter White, Bobby Swain, Gordy Harmon and Ronny Cook. Green possessed a soprano lead that sounded much like a male falsetto and it was an era when falsetto-led groups were regularly on the charts. After their first record in 1964 on Lew Bedell’s Dore label, ‘Storybook Of Love’, flopped, Harmon left to form the Whispers (the Whispers were the Superbs’ labelmates and were likewise outstanding in merging doo-wop with soul). The next record, ‘Baby Baby All The Time’, with its relaxed lope, proved a success in 1964. Similar-sounding and equally appealing follow-ups were ‘Sad Sad Day’ (1964) and ‘Baby’s Gone Away’ (1965). Around this time Swain left the group to form the Entertainers Four, who also recorded for Dore. He was replaced by Lawrence Randall. Green left in 1966 to get married and the group regrouped, but the magic was gone and by the 70s the group had broken up.
1. Storybook of Love
2. Your Eyes
3. One Bad Habit
4. Baby, Baby All the Time
5. It Hurts So Much
6. Baby's Gone Away
7. I Was Blind
8. I Was Born When You Kissed Me
9. My Heart Isn't in It
10. Sad, Sad Day
11. Baby's Gone Away [#]
12. Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye)
13. Little Girl
14. Get Ready for Love
15. If You Don't Know Me by Now [Live]

Pittsburgh's Favorite Oldies: For Lovers Only vol 4

I felt kinda guilty for my silence! So here goes some love from the salvadorian warrior. Dropping 4 hit volumes to get the traffic going on the TVD blog!
Pittsburgh's Favorite Oldies: For Lovers Only (Itzy Records)
The initial entry into this sub series from Itzy Records chronicling the Pittsburgh scene of the 1950s and early 60s is subtitled For Lovers Only and features doo-wop obscurities that firmly burrows into the heart of what that city preferred in their hometown sound. Highlights are numerable, but fans of the slow and smooth should take the time to investigate "You" by the Initials, "I Do Love You" by Tex and the Chex, "Oh My Angel" by Bertha Tillman, "I Don't Want Everything" by Jimmy McHugh and "High On A Hill" by Scott English.
The KOLD / TVD familia is busy as hell! No rest. Keepin’ them sweet rolas alive and kickin’ – Rifan! woahhhhhhhhhhhh!

DEDICATED TO ONE I LOVE - THE TEMPREES

Here's a souldies staple for the dedicated listeners from our man PANCHO out of Cali's capital city.
Led by the late Jasper "Jabbo" Philips' sweet falsetto, the Temprees excelled at singing heart touching sweet southern jerkers. Representative of that infectious sound are "Dedicated to the One I Love," "If I Could Say What's on My Mind," and "I Love You, You Love Me." Jabbo forsakes the falsetto for a natural tenor similar to the Newcomers' Bertram Brown on "Your Love Is All I Need," the mid-tempo "I Love, I Love," "You Make Me Feel So Good Baby," and James Taylor's {"Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight/A Love Song."
1. Dedicated to the One I Love - (long version)
2. If I Could Say What's on My Mind
3. I Love You, You Love Me
4. We've Only Just Begun
5. Mr. Cool That Ain't Cool
6. Your Love (Is All I Need)
7. Loving You Is So Easy
8. I Love, I Love - (long version)
9. Whole Bit of Love, The
10. You Make Me Feel So Good Baby

12. I'll Live Her Life

The Hesitations - Soul Superman
The Hesitations were from Cleveland, Ohio and comprised of George "King" Scott (lead), Fred Deal (tenor) and Leonard Veal (tenor) + 3 more going by the cover! Formed in 1965, they scored several hits in 1967 and 1968, the biggest being their gospel-infused version of the title track to the movie "Born Free". It would be fair to say they specialized in soulful treatments of blatantly pop melodies but they had some solid soul tracks also. Their pre-"Born Free" tracks, such as the ones on this album, are considered classic four-on-the-floor Northern soul. After lead singer George "King" Scott was accidentally shot and killed in February 1968, the group disbanded. This is the CD version of their first album released on Kapp in 1967. Their other albums are "Solid Gold" (Kapp, 1968), "The New Born Free" (Kapp, 1968) , "Where We're At" (Kapp, 1968) and a Best Of....CD "Let's Groove" from 2002.
They also cut some tracks on GWP with Debbie Taylor (see one of our sister blogs "Classic and Rare Soul Sisters 50s - 70s" for a great download of an anthology of her cuts - NOT TO BE MISSED in my humble opinion!)
Track List
01. She Won't Come Back
02. You'll Never Know
03. You Can't By Pass Love
04. I Believe To My Soul
05. That's What Love Is
06. Soul Superman
07. Soul Kind of Love

RossyBoy's Broken Promises Vol 14
What better to do on a rainy day than finish off another compilation. I'm keeping a couple of promises - one to myself; to bring you a favorite of mine from the late Willy DeVille in the form of his group Mink DeVille's "Just To Take That Little Girl Home". Another promise was to regular Eugene who was looking for some Emotions and Alton McClain - so here they are. The Destiny track is a "version" of Johnny Bristol's "Hang On In There Baby" and there are a few more "versions" here too. A nice slow jam from Janice McClain, sometimes mistakenly thought to be Alton's daughter, who had a couple of issues and one album in the early 80's. Some classic oldies are dusted down - Gene Chandler's sobber really takes me back. A pair of Spanish rolas with the Rondels stealing from the Delfonics (who get their own back on a pacy version of Little Anthony's "Hurt So Bad") and Frankie Nieves with the Spanish language take on his mighty "True Love". A nice Motown track from the Temps, the flip of "Don't Let The Joneses Get You Down" from 1969. Aretha's baby sis "Carolyn" comes though on another nice slowie. A hard-to-find slow oldie from Desmond Dekker shows just how great our Caribbean Soul Brothers could be. There's an early Nick Ashford classic and also a fantastic find from him and Valerie Simpson, an acetate demo for Motown "We Can Make It, We Can" which eventually made it onto the Miracles album "Four In Blue". So, the usual melting pot of stirred-up Soul - I hope you dine well! Let me know......Track List
