YOU LOST THE SWEETEST BOY - MARY WELLS

This uptempo soul gem was issued by MOTOWN in 1963. The talented MARY WELLS pushed this single all the way to #22 on the charts that year. Previous to this single Mary also charted the same year with "Laughing Boy" (US #15) and "Your Old Standby" (US #40). Again that same year after issuing "You Lost the Sweetest Boy" (US #22) she also charted "What's So Easy for Two Is So Hard for One" (US #29). 1963 was obviously one of MARY WELLS most successful in the music business.....what a great year for Mary.

RossyBoy's Take The Fifth Vol 5

Here’s another Soul mix from the Source. This one draws from a longer period of time than usual. You will find the origins of Soul music in the 1955 track “Hey Senorita” from The Penguins, blending Rhythm & Blues and Doo-Wop. It’s hard to believe that this one was so early. Also I like it because it tips a hat to our female listeners – who I am sure are tuning in and may even leave a comment someday soon – who will be The First Firme Femme? The ladies will get their own chance to shine unchallenged in my next compilation. History-wise, the set moves on through an Ike & Tina’s 1960 mover "A Fool In Love" (a great favourite of RossyChild), then embraces the usual mix of 60’s classic, Northern and O.G. Soul. We are into the 70’s with the kick-off track, The Pointer Sisters from 1971 (I couldn’t resist the fit with the Mix Title!). Hope there is something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue – but just for you! Let me know…………

There'll Come a Time (1969) - BETTY EVERETT

This sweet album from the amazing BETTY EVERETT was produced in 1969. Just before I posted this today I took a glance at it on Amazon and saw it was going at $55.00 a pop.

Betty Everett was originally from Greenwood, Mississippi. She is known for her biggest hit single "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss)."
At the age of nine, Everett began playing the piano and singing gospel music in church. She continued these activities while growing up until moving to Chicago in 1957 to pursue a career in secular music. She recorded for various small local labels before she was discovered in 1963 by A&R musical director Calvin Carter, from the then fast-growing independent label, Vee-Jay Records.
That same year, an initial single failed, but her next Vee-Jay release, a bluesy version of "You're No Good" (written by Clint Ballard, Jr. and later a #1 hit for Linda Ronstadt), just missed the U.S. top 50. Her third single, the catchy "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss)", was her biggest solo hit (a surprise for Everett, who did not want to record it and allegedly felt that the song was too silly[citation needed]). It peaked at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and made #1 on the Cashbox R&B chart.
Her other hits included "I Can't Hear You", "Getting Mighty Crowded" (covered by Elvis Costello in 1980), and several duets with Jerry Butler, including "Let It Be Me" which made the US Top 5 in 1964 and was another Cashbox R&B number 1. After Vee-Jay folded in 1966, she recorded for several other labels, including Uni, Fantasy, and ABC.
After an unsuccessful year with ABC, a move to Uni brought another major success in 1969 with "There'll Come A Time", co-written by producer and lead singer of The Chi-Lites, Eugene Record, This rose to #2 in the Billboard R&B listing (#26 on the Hot 100) and topped the Cashbox chart. However, most of her later work could not match the success she had with Vee-Jay, although there were other R&B hits with "It's Been A Long Time" and "I Got To Tell Somebody", which re-united her with Calvin Carter in 1970. Her final recording came out in 1980, again produced by Carter. Her awards include the BMI Pop Award (both for 1964 and 1991) and the BMI R&B Award (for 1964).
From the 1980s until her death, Everett resided in Beloit, Wisconsin, where she was involved in the Rhythm & Blues Foundation and the churches of the Fountain of Life and New Covenant. A flurry of press interest in her in the early 90s followed the use of "The Shoop Shoop Song" in the successful film, Mermaids, starring Cher, but she was unable to properly resurrect her career. In 2000, she made her last public appearance on the PBS special Doo Wop 51. Everett died at her home in Beloit on August 19, 2001; she was 61 years old.

I CHOOSE YOU - WILLIE HUTCH

A versatile figure during Motown's "golden years," Willie Hutch penned hits for other artists, as well as issuing numerous albums on his own. Born Willie McKinley Hutchinson during 1946 in Los Angeles, CA, Hutch was raised in Dallas, TX, where he began signing as a teenager as a member of an outfit called the Ambassadors. This fantastic cut was written specifically for the soundtrack of THE MACK.

El Chicano (1973)

One of the most visibly successful bands to emerge from the East Los Angeles Latin-rock scene in the early 1970’s was El Chicano, following on from the ground-breaking release of Viva Tirado. Jerry Salas joined this legendary group in 1973 and provides lead vocals on this, their fourth album. The lead-off track, and their biggest single around this time, "Tell Her She's Lovely" wasn’t a major hit; only reaching number 40 on Billboard’s pop singles chart and number 98 on the magazine’s R&B singles chart. But in Mexican-American neighborhoods, the song was huge and became a significant addition to El Chicano’s live perfomances.

Santana - Caravanserai (1972)

"The body melts into the universe.
The universe melts into the soundless voice.
The sound melts into the all-shining light.
And the light enters the bosom of infinite joy."
(quotation from inside front cover)

Metaphysical? Or just plain pretentious? Well, if you are a Hippy Hippy Shaker from that era you might even like the words, but don't let them put you off enjoying this cohesive suite of jazz-fusion. This, their fourth album, was a natural extension of Santana's previous three efforts. With six percussionists laying down a groove, the album effortlessly blends elements of Latin rock, blues, and soul. Cool ! ( Or maybe even Groovy, Baby !) This is as jazzy as this blog is ever likely to get.

4 Just In Time To See The Sun

POINT OF NO RETURN - ODDS AGAINST TOMORROW

"Point Of No Return" is an ultra rare track constructed by ODDS AGAINST TOMORROW. This very smooth track was issued out of the SWEET AS label which was based out of Youngstown, Ohio. This track contains some killer musical arrangements stretched over a slow tempo beat.

YOU'VE GOT TO SHOW ME - SAMMY JONES

Sammy Jones was originally from the great state of Ohio. He recorded several top quality tracks that flew under the radar of popular radio during his career. Jones began his career with a doo-wop group in Chicago and then moved on to New York to work with the Hull/Mascot group where he produced several quality songs. From there Sammy moved on to Jenesis and crafted this superb uptown ballad "You've Got To Show Me." After a stint at Jenesis Sammy then made the jump to the Mercury Label.

I KNOW YOU TOO WELL - THE SENTIMENTALS

This super tight track by THE SENTIMENTALS hit music lovers ears in 1970. It was issued by an independent music label out of Indianapolis, Indiana called KNAP TOWN. There were two versions of this song, the 1st version was a more uptempo version. This is the 2nd version that in my opinion is the perfect tempo for the song. Take a listen and enjoy, I guarantee few will be disappointed with this fabulous song.

Thee Midniters - On Whittier Blvd (1965)

What's to say about the greatest group to come out of East L.A. in the Sixties? Motown, Latin, garage rock influenced by the British invasion, or sublime ballads - you name it, they could do it and they could do it live! My own favourites on this one, without doubt, are the Willie Garcia voiced ballads "I Need Someone" and "Giving Up On Love" - but then again, my dancing and screaming days are over..... Enjoy!

I CAN'T GO ON - DEON JACKSON

Deon Jackson was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan on January 26, 1946. He studied clarinet and drums as a child, and while in high school he formed his own vocal group, concurrently performing in area talent shows as a solo act, and composing his own original material. While performing one of those songs at a high school concert, Jackson was discovered by producer Ollie McLaughlin, who'd previously launched the career of soul diva Barbara Lewis; McLaughlin soon produced Jackson's debut single which was a Detroit-area hit. Jackson spent the next two years relentlessly touring the Southeast Michigan school dance and nightclub circuit. In 1966 he issued an LP called "Love Makes the World Go Round." In 1968 he issued this Carla effort "I Can't Go On." Rumors of post-1960s sessions remain unconfirmed, and in the years to follow, Jackson largely made his living touring the Chicago cocktail lounge circuit, never fulfilling the enormous creative and commercial promise of his mid-1960s material, although his peak output remains much-adored by aficionados of classic soul. Most recently Deon has toured in the U.K.

Brenda & The Tabulations - Dry Your Eyes (1967)

Recorded in 1967 on the Dionn label in Mono only, this is the debut album from Brenda and the Tabulations, following on their major hit single "Dry Your Eyes". Mere teenagers when they recorded this album, the group hail from Philadelphia, PA. Brenda Payton's strong vocals belie her youth, while the Tabulations (Maurice Coates, Jimmy Jones, and Eddie Jackson) provide great backup. "Dry Your Eyes" will always be one of my own personal favourites. Listen out also for the beautiful "Stay Together Young Lovers", one of their follow-up singles, and an interesting take on the the Beach Boys' "God Only Knows". Enjoy this classic capture of 60's Soul!

The diverse but sophisticated funk, soul and Latin sounds of Azteca rank them amongst these greats. The band originated in the Fruitvale district of East Oakland, California, and was led by Pete and Coke Escovedo This is their first album from 1972. Be prepared for a feast - enjoy!

TRYING TO BECOME A MILLIONAIRE - THE CALIFORNIA PLAYBOYS

Here's a a very good, rare album by THE CALIFORNIA PLAYBOYS titled "Trying To Become A Millionaire." This is an energetic northern soul LP with a hot rhythm section that can barely contain themselves, even on "Someone New", a tight ballad that may be the best cut. Every song is either a gem or deep cut waiting to be mined for soul/funk/r&b comps--though the sound is unmistakably early 70s, the drum and bass flirt with disco grooves. Lester Young is an exceptional singer but never overcompensates, and neither does the band, though all involved have the talent to do so. This could've easily been a known classic with the right promotion.

CHANGO (1975) - CHANGO

This album doesn't actually fall under the category of stone cold 60s and 70s O.G. SOUL but none the less, it is a fantastic album and I thought it was only fair that I share this with everyone. Lead guitarist George Tacktikos performs strong guitar solos, especially on "Caminando" and "Chango." Thomas Alletto plays a mean organ, and Pepe Gomez gets down as the lead singer. This first LP blends raw energy with a bit of pop. The tracks "Walk on Hell" and "Caminando," are truly the group's finest moment on the LP. Other songs alternate with fast paced numbers and slow instrumentals. "Solid Karma" is another stand out. This album was clearly well-produced and thought over, the song order being just right. Anyone that enjoys early Santana will truly enjoy this album.

James Brown - Live At The Apollo (1963)

Recorded at the Apollo Theater in Harlem and released in 1963, in 2003 the album was ranked number 24 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. In 2004, it was one of 50 recordings chosen that year by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Register. Live at the Apollo was recorded on the night of October 24, 1962 at Brown's own expense. Although not credited on the album cover or label, Brown's vocal group, The Famous Flames (Bobby Byrd, Bobby Bennett, and Lloyd Stallworth), played an important co-starring role in Live at the Apollo, and are included with Brown by M.C. Fats Gonder in the album's intro. Brown's record label, King Records, originally opposed releasing the album, believing that a live album featuring no new songs would not be profitable. The label finally relented under pressure from Brown and his manager Bud Hobgood. To King's surprise, Live at the Apollo was an amazingly rapid seller. It spent 66 weeks on the Billboard Top Pop Albums chart, peaking at #2. Many record stores, especially in the southeast U.S., found themselves unable to keep up with the demand for the product, eventually ordering several cases at a time. R&B disc jockeys often would play side 1 in its entirety, pausing (usually to insert commercials) only to return to play side 2 in full as well. The side break occurred in the middle of the long track "Lost Someone". In keeping with the live, continous feel of this album, it is presented to you here as only 2 mp3 files, each representing one side of the record.

Do you have the time (1972) - THE YOUNGHEARTS

This album by THE YOUNGHEARTS was issued in 1972 under the 20TH CENTURY LABEL. DO YOU HAVE THE TIME is a mix of sweet soul and some very tight funk. This album was shortly followed by a second 20th Century outing entitled 'A Taste Of The Younghearts' (including musical arrangements from H.B.Barnum). Following that THE YOUNGHEARTS moved to ABC RECORDS.

The Impressions - Big Sixteen (1964)

Many soul fans will agree that The Impressions' "Big Sixteen" is a cornerstone to any serious collection of soul music. Just look at the tracklisting - here you'll find Gypsy Woman, Keep On Pushing, I'm So Proud and People Get Ready, to name but a few of its unchallenged contenders for any musical Hall Of Fame. These, and the other 12 sumptuous, soulful songs featured, have few equals in the annals of American music. The exquisite harmonies of Curtis Mayfield, Sam Gooden and Fred Cash make them one of the the finest soul groups of all time. The Dells Greatest Hits (1969)

"And when your hair has turned to silver, and the days of our youth have left us far behind, golden, golden memories we'll keep in our minds, and we'll always be...” listening to the Dells !

In 1967, The Dells teamed up with writer/producer Bobby Miller, who wrote and produced most of The Dells greatest hits, and arranger Charles Stepney (co producer of Earth Wind and Fire). This union produced 44 rhythm and blues chart records, including three (3) number one R&B hits: "Oh What A Night," which became a million seller in 1956 and again in 1969; "Stay In My Corner", the very first million seller single that was 6 minutes and 10 seconds long, and "Give Your Baby A Standing Ovation" (million seller 1973). The mighty “Stay In My Corner” is in this album, as well as “Always Together”, whose lyrics are quoted above and my own personal favorite, the upbeat dancer “Wear It On Our Face”.
